Periyar Tiger Reserve

An azure blue lake. Blackened tree stumps protruding from the water like an army of ancient totems. The kaei…kaei… sound of the osprey carrying across the waters. And the green forest stretching away into the hills. Periyar, situated just 10 degrees above the equator, takes your breath away with images you are unlikely to witness anywhere else in India. Situated in the Cardamom Hill Ranges of Kerala’s Idukki District, south of the Western Ghats, this fabulous tiger reserve sprawls across 777 sq. km. of biodiversity-rich forests out of which 350 sq. km. are protected as core, or undisturbed wilderness.

Nestled in the misty Western Ghats, the Periyar Tiger Reserve is a magnificent blend of human history and natural resilience. At its core lies a 26-square-kilometer man-made lake, created in 1885 when the Periyar River was dammed — an act that unexpectedly nurtured one of India’s richest ecosystems. Today, tigers roam its dense forests, while Asiatic elephants grace the lake’s green banks, symbolizing harmony between man and nature.

Spanning lush rainforests and grasslands, the reserve is interlaced by the Periyar and Mullayar rivers, its flooded valleys marked by haunting silhouettes of submerged tree trunks — remnants of a forest sacrificed to progress. Yet, Periyar thrives as a sanctuary of life and balance, where history, wilderness, and humanity coexist. It stands as a timeless reminder that even in transformation, nature endures — resilient, poetic, and profoundly alive.

Periyar: Where Wilderness and Heritage Unite

Nestled in Kerala’s verdant Western Ghats, Periyar Tiger Reserve is a timeless symphony of life—where nature, culture, and conservation flow together. The landscape is ruled by its elephants, nearly 800 strong, who move gracefully through mist-laden forests and along the shimmering reservoir. Watching them bathe, nurture their calves, or traverse the waters with trunk raised like a periscope is to witness nature’s quiet poetry.

Though the Mullaperiyar Dam transformed their habitat, the elephants adapted, turning the reservoir into a natural corridor. Yet, the dwindling number of great tuskers echoes the shadows of poaching from years past. Around them, otters glide playfully, and dholes hunt with fierce intelligence.

Periyar’s soul is deeply human too—its name honors the river that sustains both people and wildlife. Rooted in Kerala’s reverence for elephants, this sanctuary—established in 1899 and declared a Tiger Reserve in 1978—remains a living testament to coexistence and renewal.

Far from home, a bit of freedom and flexibility in going with such individuals. I enjoyed it a lot, and I anticipate figuring out the pictures and getting a charge out of recollecting all the things we did during our Kaziranga wildlife safaris.

This was the best safari adventure I have ever had. My journey partners were incredible, the food and resort were brilliant, and above all, I took in an enormous quantity about a collection of photography practices from our regarded Rakesh Sir.

Rakesh Arora Photography Safari gave me considerably more than a normal safari visit. The friends, guide and the pictures collected from my excursion. will remain with me until the end of time. My expectations were enormously surpassed by things I would never have conjured up.
